ACTF Region IV - Festival 59
Tuesday September 15, 2026 2:30pm - 4:00pm EDT
Are you passionate about developing new plays and bringing them to life on stage? Do you enjoy unearthing the historical and cultural contexts that shape characters and their stories?

In this workshop, we are going to map the intersection of in-depth dramaturgical research and the creativity of new work development. Building on Heather Helinsky’s idea of “treating the classics as new works, and new works as classics,” we will trace how canonical plays inspire contemporary writing and how playwrights borrow, adapt, and reimagine the works of artists creating before their time.

Designed for dramaturgs, playwrights, actors, directors, and designers, the session equips participants with tools to approach classics with fresh eyes and engage meaningfully with new plays.
